Joseph Pilates originally founded his Pilates Studio in New York with his wife Clara, in the 60’s. Since that time our understanding of the human body has progressed significantly. Joseph Pilates original moves form the foundation of our pilates classes, but we modify the movements into more manageable ‘bite size’ movements. By ‘deconstructing’ the exercises it is possible to ‘layer’ them back up, working with challenge but not strain.
Excellent teaching significantly reduces the chance of stress or strain so every client can find joy in movement. Each client is encouraged to comfortably challenge their body, and taught how to relax, engage and breathe. Precision, quality and control is taught in every movement with an emphasis on body awareness. As technique and body awareness build this awareness transfers into daily movement patterns and will strengthen the core, reduce back pain and underpin all daily activity and lifestyle choices.
Clients are screened before joining a class, and are asked to disclose any condition or injury. Exercises can be adapted and modified to suit most needs and clients of all abilities can generally work together. The Breathing Space team takes great care to provide inclusive classes for all ages and abilities; including children, teenagers, pregnancy, menopausal women, clients living through cancer, hysterectomy and stroke. Many of our clients come to class to rehabilitate following surgery including; hip replacements, plates & pins, knee replacements, fused spines, Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis and pretty much everything else you can think of. Where there is a will, there is a way.
